Course Description:

Created as an entry point for all incoming School of Cinematic Arts undergraduate students, Reality Starts Here combines conversations, panel discussions and workshops to chronicle up-to-the-minute facets of an industry undergoing rapid transformation, with a focus on existing and emerging paradigms of creative expression and their relationship to the media-making process. Drawing on the rich and vibrant community of talent in Los Angeles, the course is at once an opportunity for students to engage with timely ideas and technologies, as well as a chance to begin to hone one’s professional skills in preparation for a future role as a writer, director, designer, theorist, animator, producer, historian or scholar.
Students will emerge from the course with a broad and embodied understanding of foundational ideas, practices and resources that they will encounter over the duration of their career as students at SCA and beyond in an era of rapidly changing media forms.  Students will have opportunities to meet a sampling of USC faculty from across the divisions. Students will also leave the course with an enriched knowledge of one another: by sharing both the process and end products of their individual creative engagements, students will connect across divisional boundaries, discovering productive overlaps and building the foundations for lasting collaborative partnerships.
